Freight Broker 101
No. There is no shipping damage protection being provided under this program. Freight broker assurance protects the experience or expectations of the shipper and the performance of the broker. It does not provide protection that the hauler will make the shipper whole if the hauler damages the goods.
Damages to the shipper’s property that is caused by the hauler or property that is lost or stolen due to the actions of the hauler. Additionally, any damage that is a result of pre-existing conditions will not be covered.
A freight broker is typically hired by a shipper to find qualified drivers or carriers to haul loads to their final destination. The broker negotiates prices with the carriers, arranges transportation, tracks the load, manages its timely delivery, and keeps the shipper updated on the load’s status.
The shipper pays the broker a fee to ship the freight. The broker finds a qualified carrier who will move the load for the best price and is able to keep the difference as payment.
Generally brokers do not own their own transportation assets, but instead use their expertise, industry connections, and market knowledge to find the best carrier or hauler to transport the shipper’s goods.
A digital freight broker leverages advanced technology and digital platforms to facilitate the process of matching shippers with carriers for transporting goods. Unlike traditional freight brokers, digital freight brokers use online platforms and software solutions to automate and streamline various aspects of the freight broker process.
The responsibilities of case administration and payment will always reside with the broker. Tint will assist the broker by providing the tools and resources for the broker to quickly handle administration under the terms of the protection contract.
The terms of service lay out the terms in which the broker will provide claims protection to the shipper.
Freight brokers need to have specific knowledge about legal regulations for shipping different products. It is part of their job to have that legal shipping industry knowledge so that carriers and shippers know they’re legally cleared to transport products. Protection products do not replace a freight broker’s obligations to carry proper insurance and to follow applicable laws and regulations.
