Your off-trip insurance rate is tied to how often your car is booked. The more your fleet works, the less you pay. Here's how the math, the calendar, and the busy seasons all line up.
The formula
Utilization sets the rate.
Every host on Turo's off-trip insurance has a utilization rate — the share of days each vehicle was actively on a trip. When that number goes up, your per-car premium goes down. It's that simple.
The formula
Calculation will look at maximum of 12 months and minimum of 6 months, depending on when you purchased coverage.
Higher utilization = lower rate. A car that's booked 70% of the year earns a meaningfully better rate than one booked 30%. Availability matters as much as demand.
The calculation calendar
Two dates. Two rate cycles. One simple rhythm.
Your utilization is measured on two dates each year. Six weeks later, the new rate goes into effect. Here's the 12-month cadence — including Turo's summer peak booking window.
Every calendar day in your six-month lookback window affects your utilization — so keeping your cars available through each calculation date directly shapes the rate you pay in the next cycle.
Host preparation
Five ways to tee up a better rate.
Small choices in the weeks leading up to each calculation date can meaningfully move your utilization. Here's a preview — the full playbook, example schedules, and pricing tactics are in the download.
Open your calendar through the calculation window
Every blocked day lowers your utilization. Keep availability open at least 45 days before mid-March and mid-September.
Price competitively during peak season
June–August is when demand runs hottest. A small price adjustment converts more searches into bookings — and bookings into utilization.
Reduce minimum trip length
Shorter minimums unlock weekend-only travelers. The boost in trip days compounds fast across a six-month calculation window.
Keep guest ratings strong
Turo favors highly-rated hosts in search, which translates into more trip days across the calculation window.
Plan maintenance around the calendar
Stack service windows outside of calculation months whenever possible. A two-day downtime in April costs you less than one in mid-March.

I'm new to Tint. How is my rate set before I have a history?
New Tint customers need at least six months of trip data with us before utilization can be calculated individually. Until you reach that threshold, you're placed on a platform-wide average rate. Once you have six months of data on Tint, your rate becomes personalized to your own fleet's performance.
Does every vehicle get its own utilization rate?
Yes. Each vehicle is rated on its own rental history — days booked ÷ calendar days since coverage started. Cars aren't averaged across your fleet, so a heavily-booked car earns its own lower rate factor.
If I take a car off Turo temporarily, does that hurt my rate?
Only if those calendar days fall inside a calculation window. Days a car is fully delisted still count against utilization, so time short pauses outside the lookback period when you can.
When exactly does the new rate hit my account?
New rates from the mid-March calculation take effect May 1. New rates from the mid-September calculation take effect November 1. You'll see the change on your next invoice after that date.
Can a bad calculation period permanently raise my rate?
No. Every calculation date is a fresh look. One slow six-month window will affect the next rate cycle, but you can turn it around as soon as the next calculation date.
